Bible - Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha - Asmodeus

Bible - Asmodeus

ASMODEUS (אַשְׁמְדַאי, Ashmedai), the name of an apocryphal evil spirit or demon. In the Haggadah, Asmodeus is depicted as the "king of demons."

Asmodeus is first mentioned in the apocryphal Book of Tobit. This book tells us that Asmodeus fell in love with Tobit's son's future wife Sarah and prevented her from marrying. He killed Sarah's seven husbands, but was unable to kill Tobit's son.

According to another pseudepigraphic work, The Testament of Solomon, Asmodeus sows discord between the newlyweds. According to Talmudic legend, Asmodeus temporarily seizes the throne of Solomon; but he does not always do evil, sometimes even doing Solomon favors.

The Jewish folklore tradition about the relationship between Solomon and Asmodeus penetrated into early Russian apocryphal literature, becoming the archetype of folk legends about Solomon and Kitovras.
